Interactive Land Use Map

Explore four decades of land use and land cover change across the Weto Range through an interactive spatial map.

Visualising land cover change from 1985 to 2024.

The REFloC Interactive Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) Map provides a spatial record of how the Weto Range landscape has changed over nearly four decades. Using satellite imagery processed through the Google Earth Engine platform, the map classifies land into distinct cover types — from dense forest to settlements and farmland — for eight time points between 1985 and 2024.

The tool is designed to support researchers, conservationists, and community partners in identifying where forest cover has been gained or lost, tracking the expansion of agricultural and built-up areas, and informing evidence-based land management decisions.

What the map can tell you

  • Extent and location of forest loss or gain over any period
  • Encroachment of agriculture into forested areas
  • Growth of settlements and infrastructure
  • Changes in water body extent and riparian vegetation
  • Broad-scale land degradation and recovery trends

How to use the map.

Use the year selector in the left-hand sidebar to choose which LULC snapshot to display. The map will update immediately to show the land cover classification for that year. Select from eight available time points: 1985, 1991, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2024.

Switch to Comparison Mode using the toggle in the sidebar. You can then select a "before" and "after" year to view both maps simultaneously in a dual-panel layout. This mode is useful for identifying where and how much land cover has changed between any two time points.

The map legend is displayed in the sidebar and on the map itself. Each colour corresponds to a land cover class. Toggle individual classes on or off to focus on specific cover types. Hover over the legend items to highlight that class across the entire map.

Use your mouse scroll wheel or the +/− buttons to zoom in and out. Click and drag to pan. On touch devices, use pinch-to-zoom and swipe gestures. Use the Reset View button to return to the default Weto Range extent.

The statistics panel in the sidebar shows the total area (in hectares or km²) for each land cover class in the currently selected year. A bar chart summarises the proportional breakdown of cover types. In comparison mode, change figures are shown alongside the raw areas.
